Digital Edition | June 2024

This Summer, Paris will host the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad, more commonly known as the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

The organizers of the Paris games allude to the rich tradition and surrounding culture that preceded the modern interpretation. You can see the allusion to Ancient Hellenism in their symbolism. The official Olympic logo includes, in one single image, a gold medal, a flame, and the personification of France, Marianne. Furthermore, the animated mascots, collectively known as the Olympic Phryges, are anthropomorphic representations of ancient Phrygian caps.

These symbols should be familiar to Freemasons, as they allude to liberty, freedom, and the perfecting of the human soul. More specifically, they are modern representations of Greek myths; specifically, those surrounding Libera, a Romanized expression of Persephone who granted freedom to those souls who had earned it. Most importantly, in this way, they and the games that they are the symbols of allude to aspects of the Ancient Eleusinian Mysteries that inspired the rituals of Freemasonry.

In this issue we explore how Freemasons contributed to the traditions of virtue and excellence of the Olympic games throughout history?
